Service Requirement

Because any authentic living out of the Gospel requires us to become men and women for others, each student is required to complete fifteen hours of community service during each of the four years of study.

Completed service hour forms, available in the Main Office, are due at the conclusion of the third marking period. Their satisfactory completion is necessary in order for the student to be advanced to his or her next grade level.

Here are the specifics of the service requirement:

  1. Each student is responsible for completing fifteen (15) hours of service each academic year, so that their St. Joseph High School diploma will reflect not only academic achievement, but also sixty (60) hours of community service.
  2. During the third quarter, students will receive reminders of the service deadline from the corresponding department for each grade, as well as from the Spiritual Life Office.

  3. The “Service Completion” forms are due at the end of the third quarter.

    1. Students are to hand in the completed forms to Fr. Samele, who will keep a record of who has handed in their form and who has not. Service forms must be accurate and complete; they must include all the proper signatures and dates.
  4. The responsibility for fulfilling this service requirement lies with the parent and the student.
  5. At the end of the 3rd quarter, a grade of pass (P) or fail (F) will be given to each student. A Pass means the service hours are complete and the form has been properly filled out and handed in. A Fail indicates that the service hours are incomplete, and the student will not be advanced to the next grade level until they are completed.

Service is defined as any sort of work a student does for the benefit of others, for which no fee, payment, or public recognition is received.

Community, i.e. where the service takes place, is defined as either within the family, the school, or the broader community.

In order for service hours to count for the current year, they must be completed from after the last school day in June of the previous academic year through to the end of the third quarter of the current academic year. This gives the student nine months to complete fifteen (15) hours of service.

Additionally, school and class time cannot be missed in order to complete a service project. Besides these exceptions, anything else is acceptable pending the approval of Fr. Samele or Sister Florencia.
