The St. Joseph Football team won the CIAC Class SS State Championship with a 14-3 victory over Montville Saturday afternoon at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven. This is the ninth football state title in school history and the first since 1990.
The Cadets forced seven turnovers and Tyler Matakevich '11 scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns in the victory. St. Joe's trailed 3-0 at halftime before dominating play in the second half.
This is the first title won under Head Coach Joe DellaVecchia (SJ Class of 1980). St. Joseph football won five consecutive titles from 1980 through 1984. The team won three more from 1988 to 1990. Football is now tied with boys basketball for the most state titles in school history with nine. In total, St. Joe's has posted 47 state champioships in 13 different team sports.
