The St. Joseph Football team is one of the most highly decorated programs in Connecticut high school football history. The team has won a total of eight state championships (1980, '81, '82, '83, '84, '88, '89, '90) and six league titles (three each in MBIAC and ACC).
Former head coaches of the Cadets (also dubbed the "Hogs" during the '80s) include Ed McCarthy and Christy Hayes, each of whom won four state titles while leading SJ. McCarthy is currently the head coach at West Haven HS and ranks second all-time in Connecticut football history with 287 wins. Hayes is currently the Athletic Director at Wilton HS.
The current Head Football Coach is Joe DellaVecchia who took over the program in 1998. DellaVecchia is a graduate of SJ (Class of 1980) and a former player under McCarthy.
SJ Football competes at the CIAC Class SS level. The program offers three teams- varsity, junior varsity and freshmen.
