Part of the Senior Creative Writing class, Molly is one of the ten finalists in the Connecticut Young Writers Trust Competition, which seeks to encourage literacy and creative expression in high school students. Her prose entry, “Stages,” will be placed against nine other works. The winner will be announced at a dinner on June 9th. Wish Molly luck!

We are looking for help! Our Spring Phone-a-thon is scheduled for March 4 & 5 from 6 to 8:30pm, and we are looking for volunteers to help make calls to our alumni and parents who have not yet supported the St Joseph Fund. With each session we will have tasty treats and fun challenges to keep the evening exciting. Help us reach our goals and continue to make St Joseph the wonderful institution it is today, as well as into the future. Any time you can commit to this important tradition would be greatly appreciated, and who knows you might find an old friend or make a new one!

Easter Egg Hunt Help. The Alumni Council is sponsoring their Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday March 24th at 2pm. You can help by sending in candy donations (must be nut-free, individually wrapped candy). Students are also needed to volunteer at the event: service hours will be awarded!

The O'Keefe Academic Center Opens

‘A new academic center to suit the dynamic and changing needs of education in the 21^st century’

The new Robert & Maureen O’Keefe Academic Center officially opened its doors on December 2^nd. The $4.5 million academic center adds 20,000 square feet of classrooms, studios, seminar rooms, conference rooms, an auditorium, and a large open media center. New courtyards and lobby have changed the face of the school, making a visit to the Huntington Turnpike address a pleasant surprise.

Over two hundred friends of the school attended the ribbon cutting. Monsignor Jerald Doyle, Administrator for the Diocese of Bridgeport, was on hand to bless the building. First Selectman Tim Herbst said: “I see a facility like this and the outstanding education in this building, and realize such wonderful things are going on here. It’s with great pride that we say St Joseph High School is part of the town of Trumbull”. “Less than a year and a half ago, we stood with shovels in hand, as the now Archbishop of Baltimore, William E. Lori, broke the turf on this new Center,” said President of St Joseph High School, Dr William Fitzgerald, “today, with our new technology in hand, we throw open new windows on the world of global learning.”

General Contractor, Al Secondino & Son, and Architect Ray Sullivan, turned the conceptual designs by Fletcher Thompson into a 21^st Century learning center that will change the way students learn.

Aesthetics accompanied the project from the start. The building, dominated by a glass tower in front, sweeps to the Chapel, emphasizing the spiritual mission of the school. The spacious foyer is now adorned with symbols of the school’s culture, including the school’s motto ‘Privilege and Responsibility,’ while over the chapel door, the words ‘Ite Ad Joseph’ welcome all into St Joseph’s chapel. In a very visible way, the building strives to fulfill the school’s vision: to be the premier Catholic, college preparatory school in southern Connecticut.”

Sixteen months in construction, the O’Keefe Center is a tribute to the alumni, the friends and benefactors who support the school’s mission. The project was finished without debt, and without taxing future generations. As the school celebrates its 50^th anniversary, the O’Keefe Center stands as a meaningful gift from the past fifty years, to the next fifty.

Athletics plaudits and partnerships

Congratulations to senior Jake Pelletier who won BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Fall Male Player of the Year this week, and to Sabrina Toole who has been selected for the 2012 NSCAA High School Girl’s All-America Team, reaffirming her place

as one of the best soccer players in the nation this year.

Meanwhile the dust has barely settled from fall sports when the winter season has begun: and along with it, two

interesting partnerships and three new teams. Boys Swimming has formed a Team of One (with two students--you

can have up to three in a Team of One). They will be practicing and competing with Trumbull High, though they are

representing St Joe’s. Likewise Girls Gymnastics has joined practice times and competitions with Ludlowe as a Team of One, ensuring that SJ will have a voice in these two sports.

Finally, stay tuned for the new Girls Hockey Co-Op: they will be playing with Trumbull High as well. Be certain to get out this season and cheer on our newest and most trailblazing athletes.

Something Funny Happened

It started with a Ding! and continued with an assassination, time slips in the universe, and a rather unusual rendition of Hamlet. Drama Club’s production of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to St Joe’s was more than four comedic sketches, it was a celebration of the talent that is coming alive at St Joe’s--and was showcased in the new auditorium of the O’Keefe Academic Center.

Great things are afoot from the arts at SJ. Watch this space.

Reunited

Over 125 graduates from the 70s celebrated in style at Vazzy’s as they returned recently for the SJ Reunion. It was a fantastic evening--our thanks to the generous grads who made a Class Gift, and our thanks to Director of Alumni Affairs, Mrs Michele Gomez Krasznai ‘89.

The very same weekend, Rachel Sheehan ‘07 organized a mini class reunion at Crush in Milford. Conversation and catching up was the theme for the successful evening. Our thanks to Rachel for taking the initiative with her class!
