Robotics and Software Laboratory (7th, 8th and 9th Grade)

Course Description: Build, program, and operate the industry-leading Hexapod robot!

Milestone C’s Robotics & Software Laboratory (RSL) course features an industry-leading education robot unlike any other.  The Hexapod is designed by our European partner STEMI and available in the U.S. exclusively through Milestone C programs!  As students assemble the Hexapod and program its software to execute an interplanetary mission scenario, they will be introduced to design process, articulation, automation, computer science, and app development – establishing a technical foundation useful across STEM industries from aerospace and automotive to medicine and nuclear physics.  RSL defines the cutting edge of educational technologies to spark early interest in STEM and cultivate key skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.

Coding Workshop (7th, 8th, and 9th Grade)

Just added - no experience necesssary! 

Course Description: Join us for a hands-on introduction to software coding. Software is used for many purposes, including mobile apps, games, system control, websites, and much more! 

Students will learn the basic concepts of variable usage, input/output, decision making, and execution. 

Workshops will be conducted on Raspberry Pi's. We will cover Python programming, basic web design, the Internet of Things (IoT), and more.

Grades: 7, 8, and 9

Actors Workshop (7th, 8th and 9th Grade)

Course Description: Excellence in art changes lives!

This Drama Intensive offers a two week workshop format that includes instruction in basic acting skills such as voice production, movement, improvisation and scene work. Campers will experience the audition process, rehearsal and will culminate with a short performance before an audience the last day of camp. This basic course is perfect for beginners and experienced performers.

Grades: 7, 8, & 9

Cost: $150.00

Dates: July 8 – 19  (Monday-Friday)

Introduction to Academic Writing (8th and 9th Grade)

Course Description: Academic writing is the vehicle by which students express their ideas, develop arguments and engage in scholarly debate. 

This course will introduce students to the basic elements of academic writing such as evidence-based arguments, formal tone, proper citation methods, appropriate language, paraphrasing techniques, well-structured paragraphs and a clear, thesis-driven focus.  Students will also learn basic research skills using the latest technology to help them distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources.  These skills will be put to the test through a variety of writing assignments including the traditional five paragraph essay, argumentative essays, professional emails and of course the formal research paper.  Students will benefit from both professional and peer collaboration as they offer and receive feedback on their own writing as well as their classmates’ writing.

Algebra Prep (8th and 9th Grade)

Course Description: The goal of this course is to provide students with the skills necessary to be successful in high school level Algebra.  Students will review fundamental concepts including:

operations with fractions, order of operations, algebraic expressions, variables, solving equations, and polynomials.  The course will also provide an introduction to the graphing calculator, excel databases and statistical presentation skills.

Grades: 8 and 9

Cost: $175.00

Learning to Learn: Study Skills Essentials for Academic Success (8th and 9th Grade)

Course Description: The transition from middle school to high school can be an overwhelming and intimidating experience for some students.  This course is designed to relieve student anxiety by providing the organizational skills students will need to be successful throughout their high school career. 

Students will have the opportunity to develop and strengthen good study habits and learning strategies through various instructional methods.  Topics to be covered include motivation and concentration, time management, critical thinking, problem solving skills, memory techniques, effective note taking strategies, reading for information, test taking skills, how to deal with test anxiety, how to approach oral and visual presentations, public-speaking skills, and technological research tools.

The goal of this course is to help students succeed in learning by instilling self-confidence and finding the study methods and learning strategies that are most effective for them.

Grades: 8 and 9

Computer Concepts Course (9th Grade)

COMPUTER CONCEPTS

Course Description: This course focuses on information processing with emphasis on the elevated practical functions of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint for high school students. Integration of iPad applications that are utilized at St Joes including the Google student platform will also be included in this course. An overview of Internet and social media safety are included.

This is an intensive course and attendance at all classes and completion of all assignments is necessary to receive .5 credit toward freshman year curriculum; which will result in a one semester study period for the 2019-2020 school year.

Students must own or have purchased an iPad prior to the start of the course. Any iPads ordered in May through St Joseph High School will be delivered prior to the start of the course.

Important Notice: Incoming freshmen enrolled in either Band or Choir are encouraged to register for this course; however, due to the schedule for this track of study students will not be eligible for the one semester-long study period for the 2019-2020 school year.

Refund Policy: Due to the high demand for the Computer Concepts course, refunds will not be issued once a session is closed. Furthermore, students may not change sessions once registered.

SAT Prep Course (11th and 12th Grade)

Course Description: Contrary to what many people think, the SAT is an exam that one can study for when given the right tools to use in preparation. 

This one-week, intensive course is designed for both students looking to improve their scores and students preparing to take the exam for the first time.  The course will include a review of the skills and content knowledge tested on the exam, a breakdown of the test structure and question types, an introduction to test-taking strategies for each section, and timed practice quizzes to help alleviate the stressful nature of the exam environment. 

Grades: 11 and 12
