2021-2022 Game Recaps

3/8/22 - SJ Cadets vs #4 New Canaan (Darien Ice House).
STATE FIRST ROUND Cadets travel to Darien again for their 4 meeting with the New Canaan Rams to start the state tournament. The Cadets having not defeated New Canaan this year felt confident as each game was a close matchup this season. First period saw both teams with chances with New Canaan scoring first and Cadets respond minutes later with a goal by MJ Torre assisted by Joey Bisson. Teams go to the locker room tied 1-1. The second period opens with some great defensive play, New Canaan scores about half the way through the period and Cadets had their chances but go into the 2nd intermission down 2-1. Cadets come out in the third with a lot of energy and score 2 minutes in on a goal by Andrew Tata assisted by Brady Tommasi. Cadets then take the lead a minute later on a goal by Johnny Karafa. Cadets try to keep the 3-2 lead but the energy is depleted as New Canaan's depth proves to be too much. New Canaan scores to tie the game with 4:45 remaining and then take the lead two minutes later with 2:45 left. Cadets pull their goalie to try to tie it but give up an empty netter with 9 seconds remaining. Cadets get eliminated with a hard fought 5-3 loss. Tyler Stiewing again great in net with 32 saves. Seniors Trevor Kellogg, Johnny McNabola and Tyler Steiwing see their SJ careers come to a close with outstanding seasons.
 

2/26/22 - #6 SJ Cadets vs #3 New Canaan (Darien Ice House)

FCIAC QUARTERFINALS. Cadets start the FCIAC championship chase against the New Canaan Rams. Cadets lost their two meetings vs New Canaan but both were close games. The teams battled again with most of the first period going scoreless until New Canaan scores with two minutes left in the period to take a 1-0 lead. The second period sees much of same defensively, however the end of the period gets the Cadets again as New Canaan scored with two minutes left. Cadets come out in the third with a lot of pressure but just when the Cadets through the lead was cut to 2-1, the referres called a stopage of play as the puck was loose and put into the net. So the score remains 2-0, New Canaan eventually scores another and then gets an empty netter to end the game. Cadets get eliminated with the 4-0 loss. Tyler Stiewing battled with 26 saves.


2/23/22 - SJ Cadets vs Simsbury (Shelton Rinks) SENIOR NIGHT
Senior Night as the three Cadet seniors, Captain #4 Trevor Kellogg, #30 Tyler Stiewing, and Alternate Captain #16 John McNabola take the ice for the last time in Shelton as a Cadet. The game starts against the Simsbury Trojans and senior captain Kellogg gets the Cadets in front 1-0 with a goal assisted by Brady Tommasi. Things looks good for the Cadets but Simsbury turned up the pressure and quickly scored two to take a 2-1 lead. In a back and forth period, Joey Bisson ties the game assisted by Andrew Tata and Jonathan Vitka. Game goes to it's first intermission tied 2-2. The second period sees more back and forth but late in the second, Simsbury takes the lead and adds another to go up 4-2. The Cadets try to battle back into this one but there will be no more scoring in this one as Simsbury beats the Cadets 4-2. Senior Stiewing with 26 saves in this one.


2/21/22 - SJ Cadets at Notre Dame of Fairfield (Shelton Rinks)
In the second matchup between the Cadets and NDF, SJ made quick work and jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Johnny Karafa assisted by Caden Mitchell and two goals by Andrew Tata with Joey Bisson assisting twice and Mitchell with another assist. The second period the Cadets did not let up, Cole Bruenig with his first varsity goal assisted by Brady Tommasi and Tata nets another assisted by Bisson to take a 5-1 lead into the 3rd period. SJ continues the great play and adds 4 goals, Another from Tata (4 goals), two more from Karafa (3 goals) and one from Mark Husted-Edwards assisted by Bisson (4 assists). Cadets had a complete game and strong performance walking out of the Shelton Rink 9-1 winners.
 

 

2/19/22 - SJ Cadets vs Darien Blue Wave (Shelton Rinks)
Cadets look to take down Darien for a second time this season. These teams both played the night before so legs were going to be tested. The first period is a back and forth quick moving period with no penalties or goals. Teams going into the first break 0-0. Darien starts the second with a goal but Caden Mitchell ties it up with his first varsity goal assisted by Joey Bisson. The Blue Wave jump right back on top with 3 unanswered goals to go up 4-1 heading into the 3rd period. Joey Bisson scores on a great backhander assisted by Andrew Tata to chip away and bring it to 4-2. But Darien's bench was too deep tonight as they put in 2 to close out the scoring 6-2. Tyler Stiewing with another 27 save performance in the loss..


2/18/22 - SJ Cadets vs Ridgefield Tigers (Shelton Rinks)
Cadets host the the Ridgefield Tigers in Shelton for an early afternoon game. Game starts back and forth as the team each go through a flurry of shots with nothing getting in until the Cadets deflect one into their own net. Ridgefield holds that lead until Joey Bisson scores with 30 seconds left in the 2nd assisted by Johnny Karafa and Mark Husted-Edwards. Both teams struggle to get any momentum as the scores stays locked 1-1. With 4 minutes remaining in the game, Ridgefield scores and then tallies another two goals late. Tyler Stiewing with 27 saves in the 4-1 loss..


2/15/22 - SJ Cadets vs West Haven Blue Devils (Shelton Rinks)
Cadets host the West Haven Blue Devils in Shelton. Cadets jump on West Haven early with a goal by Johnny Karafa assisted by Andrew Tata and Mark Husted-Edwards. Two and a half minutes later they go up 2-0 with a goal by MJ Torre assisted by Joey Bisson. The lead continues into the second period until a goal by Trevor Kellogg assisted by Tata and Bisson makes it 3-0 heading into the 2nd intermission. West Haven bounces back and gets two goals on the board to make it 3-2 Cadets with minutes remaining. Joey Bisson gets the empty netter assisted by Ryan Rooney to put the game away. Tyler Stiewing with 25 saves to round out a solid effort by the Cadets winning 4-2.


2/11/22 - SJ Cadets vs Greenwich Cardinals (Shelton Rinks)
Cadets host the Greenwich Cardinals in Shelton. Goalie own the first period as it goes scoreless. Joey Bisson puts the Cadets up 1-0 with a great unassisted goal. The 1-0 scores continues as both defenses continue to dominate but with under 2 mins left, Greenwich finds a way to tie the game 1-1. Cadets quickly regroup and with 19 seconds left in the game, Johnny Karafa scores assisted by Ryan Rooney and Trevor Kellogg. Tyler Stiewing solid in net again with 29 saves. Cadets win 2-1.


2/8/22 - SJ Cadets at Fairfield Mustangs (Wonderland of Ice)
Cadets head down to Bridgeport and before a blink of an eye are down 3-0 to Fairfield. The Cadets regroup and settle things down. The remainder of the game sees a very even game. Cadets cut into Fairfield's lead and make it 3-1 on John McNabola's goal. Fairfield would add one late in the game to seal it. Cadets lose 4-1.
 

2/5/22 - SJ Cadets vs Hamden Green Dragons (Shelton Rinks)
Cadets host Hamden for their second meeting of the season. The Cadets appeared fatigued after their emotional game in the Coach Eddy Classic. The first period was scoreless between the two teams. Hamden then jumped out to a 1-0 lead only to see the game get back to a tie on a blast from Mark Husted-Edwards assisted by Joey Bisson and Johnny Karafa. Then Hamden scored two goals towards the end of the second period to go into the intermission with a 3-1 lead. The teams went back and forth during the third period with the Cadets not able to catch up and an empty netter by Hamden sealed it. 4-1 loss for the Cadets.
 

2/2/22 - SJ Cadets at Trumbull Eagles (Shelton Rinks) The Coach Eddy Classic
Trumbull hosted the Cadets this year in the 2nd Coach Eddy Classic. This was the biggest crowd at the Shelton Rinks in a few years as the support poured in for Coach Eddy. The Cadets jumped out quick to a 1-0 lead with a goal from Joey Bisson unassisted fifty seconds into the game. The game was quickly tied a few minutes later and the first period came to a close at 1-1. Trumbull played a physical game and the refs for the most part let things go. The Cadets continue to put pressure throughout the game with 38 shots. However they gave up an ill timed goal during their power play to go down 2-1 entering the second break. The Cadets continue the shots on goal but could not tie the game up. Final 2-1 loss for the Cadets.


1/24/22 - SJ Cadets at Darien Blue Wave (Darien Ice House)
Down to the Darien Ice House we got to play one of the juggernauts of the FCIAC, the Darien Blue Wave. With the number of close, last minute, overtime games the Cadets have been in this season, they need a solid performance and a win. The first period saw the teams test each other out and the Cadets face a lot of defensive pressure. Andrew Tata scores assisted by Trevor Kellogg and Joey Bisson to go into the first break up 1-0. The second period sees a lot of pressure again but the grab another goal by Johnny Karafa assisted by Kellogg. Second period closes with the Cadets up 2-0. The 3rd period continues as Tyler Stiewing continues to be a wall with a total of 51 saves and a great shot blocking performance by Joey Bisson who stopped a number of pucks from getting anywhere near the net. Karafa grabs another goal unassisted on a breakaway. Trying to secure the 3-0 lead, SJ goes into defensive mode and Darien finally breaks through with a goal to make the score 3-1. Darien pulls the goalie as time is dwindling and Kellogg takes one from the defensive zone and scores an empty netter assisted by MJ Torre, to give the Cadets some breathing room. Karafa then scores assisted by Bisson to complete his HAT TRICK and shut the door on the game 5-1 win for the Cadets!


1/22/22 - SJ Cadets at Stamford-Westhill (Terry Connors)
Saturday night sees the Cadets travel to Terry Connors in Stamford. The goals keep coming for the Cadets in this one as Cadets walk out of there with a 7-2 victory. Goals by Casper Zajaczkowski assisted by Andrew Tata, Tata unassisted, another by Tata assisted by Joey Bisson, Johnny Karafa assisted by John McNabola, Bisson assisted by Tata and Karafa, Tata unassisted to complete his HAT TRICK and Bisson adds another unassisted. Stewing with a solid night and the Cadets get a much needed victory!


1/19/22 - SJ Cadets at Xavier Falcons (Cromwell-Olympic Rink)
Cadets traveled Cromwell and played their first game of the season on an Olympic size rink. A serious advantage for the home team who takes full advantage of the extra ice. Xavier strikes first, Cadets even it right up as Johnny Karafa scores assisted by John McNabola and Mark Husted-Edwards. They go into the first intermission 1-1. Xavier helped by a few untimely SJ penalties scores 3 unanswered to head into the 2nd intermission up 4-1. The Cadets, as they seem to do quite often this year, jump right back into it as Andrew Tata scores unassisted and Mark Husted-Edwards gets another assisted by Joey Bisson. Xavier responded and goes up 5-3, but the Cadets again chip away at the lead with a goal from Brady Tommasi assisted by Joey Bisson. That's a close the the Cadets today as they give up a goal and an empty netter to lose 7-4. Brick wall Stiewing has 41 saves in the loss.


1/13/22 - SJ Cadets vs New Canaan Rams (Shelton Rinks)
Cadets host New Canaan in another Heavyweight battle. Although the record does not show it, the Cadets have been in every game against top ranked teams. This one has the Cadets jump on top 1-0 on a goal by Brady Tommasi assisted by Johnny Karafa. New Canaan then scores the next two to go up 2-1 but the resilient Cadets tie the score with a goal from Casper Zajaczkowski assisted by Joey Bisson and Mark Husted-Edwards. They Cadets battle but again fall just short as New Canaan scores with 5:49 left and hold onto win 3-2. Tyler Stiewing again with a solid game between the pipes.


1/11/22 - SJ Cadets at Greenwich Cardinals (Dorothy Hamill)
Cadets traveled down to Greenwich for the first match up of the year. Last year these two teams played 3 times including in the playoffs with all of them being extremely competitive. Greenwich jumped out early and the Cadets quickly responded with a goal for MJ Torre of a deflection on a shot from Mark Husted Edwards who gets the assist. The 1-1 score carried for the rest of the first period and all the way through the second period. The defensive battle carried into the 3rd period until Greenwich scored 2 mins in. Cadets tie the game with 7 minutes left off a great feed from Trevor Kellogg to Jonathan Vitks who buried the pass in the back of the net. Game now tied 2-2. Both teams battle until Greenwich takes the lead with 2:30 remaining, Cadets battle to tie the game but give up an empty netter as time expires on this one, Tyler Stiewing kept the Cadets in it with 23 saves. Cadets lose 4-2.
 

1/8/22 - SJ Cadets vs Fairfield Mustangs (Shelton Rinks)
Fairfield visits the Shelton Rinks in the late Saturday night game. Cadets take an early lead in the 1st period with a goal from Mark Husted-Edwards assisted by Joey Bisson and Johnny Karafa. In the second Cadets add to their lead with a goal from Andrew Tata assisted by Mark Husted-Edwards and Trevor Kellogg, and then take a 3-0 lead on Karafa's goal assisted by John McNabola and MJ Torre. Cadets put on a flurry of shots to try to extend the lead further. However, penalties put them in a 5 on 3 Penalty kill situation which they almost escaped until Fairfield scored to make it 3-1 and the momentum shifts to Fairfield as they score another to end the 2nd period down 3-2. Both teams battle throughout the 3rd period, the score remains 3-2 until Fairfield pulls the goalie with just over a minute remaining and score to knot the game at 3 as time expires. Overtime sees more even play until the Fairfield begins a powerplay and quickly gains a 5 on 3 on a questionable call. The 5 on 3 proves too much in the extra period and Cadets lose 4-3, their 2nd overtime loss in a row.


1/6/22 - SJ Cadets vs Ridgefield Tigers (Winter Garden)
Originally scheduled for January 5th, snow pushed this game one day. Cadets coming off a two week holiday start a bit rusty and see themselves down 2-0 after the first period. The open the 2nd and give up another goal to go down 3-0 but score a powerplay goal by Mark Husted -Edwards assisted by Joey Bisson. After another Ridgefield goal, the Cadets find the back of the net twice, one goal by Bisson assisted by Jonathan Vitka and Andrew Tata, the other goal by Brady Tommasi assisted by Tata. They go into the 2nd intermission down 4-3. Midway though the 3rd period, Ridgefield scores but Cadets come back with 3 goals, 2 unassisted by Tata and 1 by Bisson assisted by Husted-Edwards to take s 6-5 lead with 4 minutes remaining in the game. Ridgefield would not give up and tie it up 6-6 and that is how regulation ends. In the 8 minute overtime period, Ridgefield scores to take the win 7-6.


12/22/21 - SJ Cadets vs Hamden Green Dragons (Louis Astorino)
Cadets travel to Hamden to try to make it two wins in a row. They get on the board quickly with a goal from Trevor Kellogg assisted by Jonathan Vitka and Andrew Tata. Hamden scores two quick goals as the period comes to a close and take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Opening the second period, Hamden adds a goal, but the Cadets battle back and score twicw, a goal by Vitka assisted by Johnny Karafa and Kellogg, and the other by Karafa assisted by Tata and John McNabola. They head into the second intermission tied 3-3. The teams battle back and forth until Hamden takes the lead 4-3 late in the 3rd period, they then add two late goals as the Cadets try to get back in the game. Final 6-3 Cadets on the short end of this one.


12/20/21 - SJ Cadets vs Notre Dame Lancers (Shelton Rinks)
This game was postponed from December 15th. Cadets jump out to a 1-0 lead on Johnny Karafa's goal assisted by Mark Husted-Edwards. NDF answers back with a short handed goal to end the first period with a tie 1-1. Brady Tommasi gets his first Varsity goal assisted by Andrew Tata to put the Cadets on top 2-1. However the Lancers again answer and the second period ends 2-2. Tata scores to put the Cadets back on top assisted by Trevor Kellogg and Joey Bisson. They quickly add another on a shot from Husted-Edwards assisted by Kellogg to put to put the Cadets up 4-2. In the final minutes the teams trade goal, Cadets get an empty netter by Karafa and the Cadets win, final 5-3.


12/18/21 - SJ Cadets vs Immaculate Mustangs (Danbury Ice Arena
Cadets first game of the year and they take on the Immaculate Mustangs, Mustangs jump out to an early 1-0 lead only to see the Cadets even it up on a Andrew Tata goal assisted by Johnny Karafa. Karafa then gives the Cadets a 2-1 lead on a unassisted goal off the faceoff. Immaculate gets two goals in the 2nd period to take a 3-2 lead into the 3rd period. Casper Zajaczkowski nets his first varsity goal assisted by Tata to bring the game back to 3-3. Immaculate scores late in the 3rd to take a 4-3 lead and although the Cadets had a lot of close chances in the final minute, the game ends 4-3. Tyler Stiewing with 22 saves in goal.
