St. Joseph Girls Soccer Wins the 2025 FCIAC Championship

The St. Joseph girls' soccer team is the 2025 FCIAC Champions after beating Greenwich in a penalty-kick shootout on Tuesday, Oct. 28th. The score was 0-0 heading into penalty kicks, and the Cadets dominated 4-1. Goalkeeper Cailyn O'Hara was named game MVP.

“It feels wonderful,” Head Coach Jack Nogueira said. “We knew Greenwich was a great team, but we stuck to our game plan and got a couple of breaks."

The Cadets controlled the pace of play during the first half. They were aggressive, fighting for every loose ball and trying to force turnovers. This caused most of the half to take place near the Greenwich net. However, the Cardinals' defense bent but did not break, as their defense closed St. Joseph's passing lanes and their goalkeeper stopped every shot sent her way, keeping the match scoreless heading into halftime.

The second half was more even between the two sides. St. Joseph tried to break through, but was repeatedly blocked by a Greenwich defender. The Cardinals would use this stop to try to create a breakaway, but were stifled by the Cadets' goalkeeper. At the end of regulation, both sides were locked in a heated stalemate.

The Cadets went a perfect 4/4 on their penalty kicks, and O’Hara stopped two of Greenwich's three attempts, sealing the match and clinching the FCIAC title.

“I'm just so happy for the kids,” Nogueira said. “We lost in the PKs last year, and it was devastating. This is just a wonderful feeling."

Girls' Soccer will start its run for a state title this Saturday.
