It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Norman (Norm) Philip DeTullio, a cherished and devoted member of the St. Joseph High School community for over three decades.
Norm's legacy as an educator and mentor has positively impacted countless students, colleagues, and the entire St. Joseph family. Norm taught Literature and Creative Writing at St. Joseph High School for 32 years, serving as Chairman of the English Department for ten of those years. His passion for literature and education was evident through his many contributions: he published the school's first Literary Journal in 1971, moderated the school newspaper during its formative years, initiated the Driver Education Program in 1968, and expanded the bookstore operation in the 1980s. In 1972, he revitalized the financially troubled Yearbook, gaining recognition from the Columbia University School of Journalism. Throughout his tenure, he consistently served as a supportive and enthusiastic Senior Adviser.
Norm's journey to St. Joseph High School began on a whim, as he often fondly recalled: "I arrived at St. Joe's on a whim with the intention of staying only one year to figure out what I was going to do for the rest of my life. I just loved the place so much, I never left." This love for St. Joseph and its community became a cornerstone of his life and career.
Beyond his teaching career, Norm contributed to The New York Times and various magazines, and even published a fictional novella. In his active retirement, he served on the Alumni Council, participated in humanitarian activities, taught a special program through Sacred Heart University, and pursued his passion for writing. Norm's impact on our school and community is immeasurable. His warmth, wisdom, and dedication will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife Barbara, their children, and the entire DeTullio family during this difficult time.
Norman Philip DeTullio's legacy will forever remain a vital part of St. Joseph High School. We will honor his memory by continuing to inspire and support our students with the same passion and commitment that he exemplified throughout his remarkable life.
