Past Sister Catherine Fanning Honorees

Sister Catherine Fanning

Sister Catherine Fanning, SSND

Sister Catherine Fanning, a native of Brooklyn, New York, professed into the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1951. She held a BS from the College of Notre Dame and a Master’s Degree from Boston College.

For 17 years, Sister Catherine taught in Massachusetts before being transferred to St. Joseph High School in 1969. It was to become her home for the remaining 22 years of her life. At St. Joes, she taught Chemistry, moderated the Student Council, coached the Cheerleading Squad, and supervised student activities.

Throughout most of these years she held the office of Vice Principal.
In the quiet of her office, often piled deep with paperwork, Sister Catherine kept track of all her students, knowing each one on a first name basis. When trouble seemed eminent, she would call them in and challenge them. Her genuine concern, rigid and steadfast, always seemed to echo the spirit of her father. “You can do better than that,” she would remind them. Most would.

Today, Sister Catherine Fanning is remembered as a cornerstone of the St. Joseph High School spirit. She remains a model to be followed – a true example of what it means to be dedicated. From the depths of her own secret heart, many of her students came to realize that goals in life have few insurmountable roadblocks, that success often comes out of momentary failure and that true faith has no boundaries.
